Orphanage
Orphans and Orphanage is Key in this Ministry
I know it firsthand what it is like to be a deprived, hungry and uncared little boy in a poor remote Banjara village. I was Born in the Mud and lived in a small hut as one of 10 children. An Indian missionary found me naked, starving as a four years old boy and brought me to a Christian boarding home. And a faithful woman who has never met me sponsored me 13 years. Thanks to those two Godly people, I am able to serve God with everything I can and with everything I have. It was that personal experience that gave me and Rambai a tender place in our hearts for the destitute, abandoned, or orphaned children of our own people.
Unwanted Children: Children are viewed as heavy unwanted burdens in most Banjara villages. People cannot afford large families and there is absolutely no concept of birth control. They cannot feed or cloth their children, yet more and more are born. Because of these conditions, recently the Indian national papers had shocking headlines saying “They sell their children for a day’s meal“ and once it was “you can get a baby girl for Rs.50/-“ Banjara children were actually being sold for just a few dollars in the market, Boys as field worker/slaves for $ 7-10 in US money, Girls for child prostitution for 10-15 in US money and Babies as child sacrifices to Hindu gods for 7-10 in US money. Virtually there is no Education. That’s why Banjaras are 90% illiterate. Most villages have No schools or education opportunities of any kind. People are ignorant of even the basic things, such as the idea of family planning, primary health care, and hygiene. Such is the condition of our people.
Children’s home was founded in 1994 when five abandoned Banjara children with Tuberculosis were found crying and begging in the streets. Rambai’s heart was broken. "I couldn't just ignore them and walk away," she said "How could the love of God be in me if I could do that?" And so she brought them home and a vision for an orphanage began. Five became Ten and fifteen and then fifty and so on and now we are able to expand into four branches. Our hearts for needy Banjara children has just grown over the years. More and more abandoned children came to live with us. Eventually we realized that we would need a very large building to house and care for all the children God was sending their way. Our vision was shared, people gave, and an orphanage was built. In June of 2002 the building was complete and 335 were welcomed into their new home. I and Rambai are convinced that caring for orphans is an essential part of the Gospel message of Good news.
I assure you that feeding, clothing and providing for 2300 orphans, 180 Junior College students, staff and 120 Nursing students everyday is an exercise in faith all by it, and also to support 130 Native Missionaries. Why it is an exercise of faith, well, the answer is the need of funds. That is our most urgent need because of these 2300 plus children because hardly not even 700 are regularly sponsored. I am always grateful for a faithful monthly sponsor that gave me regularly for 13 years to provide my housing, food, clothes and education. Today I believe God is using me for His work in a mighty way. All it takes is a little money sacrificed from your daily luxuries. Jeans from American eagle or Hollister or any cloth store will provide food, Education and Housing for at least two orphans. Think about it. YOU can be the force behind these young men and women to become great leaders tomorrow. I mean, look at it this way. Don’t you think taking to least probability there would be a hundreds who wants to become great pastors, Evangelists or Future Missionaries back to their villages. So please do help in whatever way you can. A twenty five dollars is everything an orphan needs for a month.
